Bijar Rug

Bijar is a well known rug production region, located in northwest Iran; inhabited by a Kurdish population.

Bijar rugs are often called the "Iron rug of Persia". They were woven on a wool foundation and had three wefts between every row of knots. This made the rugs extremely heavy, stiff and almost impossible to fold over. For this reasons they are sort after by antique rug collectors because of their hard wearing abilities.

More modern Bidjar rugs are usually just double wefted and are woven on a cotton foundation so are lighter and easier to handle.
