Bitmap

Pixel based full tone images on the computer. Photographs are an example of a bitmap image. Programs like Photoshop, Firewire and Painter are designed for the editing of bitmap images. The tones, and easy access to photographic images are the advantage of bitmap as an imaging process. The disadvantage lies in that there is a limit to how far they can be scaled up. Bitmap images soon display jagged edges to tones as they increase in size until the objects can become unrecognisable, and print unreadable. This is why many graphic artists love vector based programs like Illustrator, as they don’t suffer this problem.
