Opaque watercolor, the term was applied in former times to watercolor mixed with Chinese White, to gouaches, and to various poster paints when used on a transparent watercolor. Turner habitually used body color to literally add ‘body’ to passages of paint to strengthen, add emphasis and embolden lively passages. There are many purists who believe the use of opaque passages in a watercolor is not wise. Perhaps it can be a dangerous tightrope to walk for it is easy to ruin the freshness of the transparent colors. A close inspection of Turners watercolors work, however, shows the body color to be an exciting and powerful creative painting tool.
