A Copywriter is someone who writes the text used in advertising or marketing materials. It's often considered an offshoot of journalism and graphic design.
A copywriter often works alongside a Graphic Designer so that together they can present a message that is visual in the sense of typography and informative to get the clients marketing message across.
Copywriter - Job Description:
The aim of the copy writer is to write creative text that sells the product, or effectively communicates to the customer the information that they need to know. This is sometimes called "Visual Communication". Presenting text to be read may sound easy, however in a world filled with advertising and marketing, getting the right message across rapidly is often what is required and is not easy.
A copywriter will work often take standard text written by the client, and embellish it, professionally weaving together text and typography with visual elements that will engage a viewer and want them to read more. Good copywriters often have a skill in changing tone or using unique sentences or specific wording that engages the target audience and therefore makes the marketing more effective.
To pursue a career as a copywriter it helps to have an interest in Sales & Marketing, Advertising, Journalism, Visual Communication, Graphic design & Creative Writing.
Graphic Designer - Employment Start:
It is rare to see an entry level role advertised for a copy writer, commonly it is a job that evolves from a graphic design role, or a role in advertising and visual communication such as public relations, where by a staff member happens to have a knack of producing good copy in a visual setting or for media releases and ends up with the position of writing all the copy for future tasks,
Employment for experienced copy writers is however regularly available and is in demand. With so many people now publishing online, content editors are also in demand and the skills required are less intensive.
Some copywriters evolve from a journalism background. Perhaps as a start you could consider approaching websites, magazines and newspapers and seek a junior freelance position writing articles or press releases, or as a content editor to gain necessary experience whilst you also attend some short courses. Any roles like this would give you a good grounding in the skills needed to be a copywriter.
Copywriting - Training & Education:
There are some advertising and marketing schools that offer specific courses in copywriting as well as visual communications and journalism. These would be the most appropriate courses to enroll in.
Again, as copywriting tends to be a job that is evolved into,your could perhaps also enroll in a several short courses in related fields that may interest you, for example a communication course, a marketing courses, or even take a creative writing class.
