How to make Casein Paint
Casein Paint is a type of paint that is made using milk or a mixture of milk & cream. Where by the curds of the milk form the vehicle and the binder for the pigments; thus forming a water soluble paint. (Casein is actually the name of an animal protein only found in milk)
Casein paint is fast-drying and water-soluble. In particular it is used for Mural Painting. Casein paint often has a glue-like consistency, that be thinned with water.
How to make Casein Paint:
- Mix 1 liter of milk with two teaspoons of low-fat sour cream. Combine well.
- Cover & leave the mixture in a warm place until it thickens (aprox 12 to 24hours)
- Add a few teaspoons of lemon juice or vinegar to make the mixture curdle.
- Separate the curds from the whey by pouring the mixture through a cheesecloth placed in a colander. (remaining curd is called quark)
- Separately, dissolve one tablespoon of ammonium carbonate in 3/4 cup of warm water then add this mixture to the quark.
- Kept refrigerated if you are not yet ready to mix your pigments.
- Add 3 parts pigment to 1 part mixture.
Casein paint making tips:
If you are mixing in a powdered pigment, its recommended to dissolve it in a little water first. Keep casein binder, or casein paint you have mixed in the fridge as much as possible as it don't not last a long time. Casein paint paint may be thinned with water. For glazing with casein paint try adding natural dyes as your pigment.
