Frit
Frit is a powdered glass like material used in pigments, enamels and pottery glazes. It is also a term often used to describe other similar substance or stages of glass like materials. It's appearance is similar to crushed glass.
Frit is a material of a ceramic composition that through a kiln process is quenched to form a glass-like substance, which is then shattered by rapid cooling and then ground down to a powder.
Frits are used in pigments, enamels and glazes. The reason for the method used in creating frit is to render any soluble and/or toxic components insoluble by causing them to combine with silica and other added oxides.
The origin of the word "frit" dates back to 1600’s where it was described as " a calcinated mixture of sand and fluxes ready to be melted in a crucible to make glass".
