A gilder cushion, also sometimes called a gilding pad, is a flat surfaced cushion, normally made from animal skin. It is used to rest sheets of metal leaf on during the gilding process. A sheet of metal leaf can be cut on the cushion using a gilding knife, or slid off the gilders cushion using a gilding brush as it is applied to a surface.

The gilders cushion is a very handy gilding tool as it provides a flat, smooth surface with just enough tooth to grip the sheet of metal leaf so you can applying it lightly and evenly to the surface being gilt. It is used rather than using your hands, as metal leaf is so thin and fragile that it would tear easily if applied using your finger tips.
