The traditional name for the various printmaking techniques now commonly referred to under the term ‘etching’. More properly etching is itself a type of intaglio printmaking.

The word intaglio predates etching as it applies to any incised lines below a surface. Etching evolved from two of these intaglio processes, engraving into stones and gold for jewelry, and etching designs into medieval armour. Artists have continued to use the old word to this day, while most of the older intaglio processes have become obsolete. Durer is a famous artist who started artistic engraving after learning the process as an apprentice goldsmith (his father was a goldsmith).
