Metal Clay
Metal Clay, is a type of Modeling Clay that uses a naturally sourced binder mixed with metal or alloy powders.
Once metal clay is fired, the binder burns away leaving the metal behind, covered in a light non-toxic powder. The piece is then polished.
Metal Clay is used in a similar way to Polymer Clay, it is sculpted, allowed to dry, and then cured by heat. It can be fired in a variety of ways including in a kiln, by a small gas torch, or on a gas stove. Once fired, shrinkage of between 5% and 30% can occur depending on the brand of metal clay you have used.
The main types of metals and alloys available in metal clay are
- Silver Metal Clay
- Gold Metal Clay
- Platinum Metal Clay
- Copper Metal Clay
- Bronze Metal Clay
- Steel Metal Clay
For metal clays containing precious metals of Silver, Gold or Platinum, there are two main varieties, Precious Metal Clay (PMC Clay) and Art Clay Silver (ACS). Art Clay silver tends to shrink less than PMC, approximately 5% to 10%.
Metal clay can be purchased from any Sculpture Supplies, Jewelry Making Supplies and some Polymer Clay Supplies stores.
