Methylated Spirits


Methylated spirits, often called “metho” is essentially methanol which is an alcohol-based solvent.

Artists used methylated spirits generally for cleaning as it dissolves oil paint, varnish and inks. It will also remove permanent marker from hard surfaces and can be used to clean grease from surfaces prior to painting or priming.

WARNING: Methylated spirits is flammable and a mild corrosive. Do not use near heat or flame and avoid skin contact and prolonged exposure.
