Mica

Mica is the name given to naturally occurring metal minerals mined from the earth which can be split into extremely small flat surfaced fragments.

Mica particles are often very reflective and with movement of light mica powder often called metal powder or metal dust will sparkle.

Mica is used extensively in the production of pigments, including artists paints. Artists paints that use mica are often called opalescent or iridescent. They can be used quite creatively to capture light and reflect light.

Mica is also used in Metal Modeling Clay such as Precious Metal Clay and Art Clay Silver.

WARNING: Mica powder can easily become air-born and it may cause damage to your lungs if it inhaled. A breathing mask should always be worn when using mica powder or dry mice pigments.

Art Making Tip: Australian artist Brad Buchel uses semi-transparent mica paints and glitter applied with-in layers of apoxy resin to create contemporary paintings that change color intensity and hue depending on the angle and the conditions in which the painting is viewed. Try this technique for yourself.
