Plinth design tips

A plinth is commonly a timber display stand used to display sculpture.

A plinth is a simple but heavy piece of display equipment that with some clever design can be multi purpose, and easy to transport.

If you are designing your own custom made plinth here are some tips;

  • Inter fitting plinths - Consider making 3 plinths that all fit inside one another, thus maximizing space when storage or transport is required. Additionally 3 plinths varied in size often can be grouped together to greater visual effect.

  • Combined plinth dimensions - Consider your form of transport. Do you intend to use a trailer? a family car? or a station wagon to transport your plinths?Consider the dimensions of the space available, efficient use of space may enable you to easily transport two plinths side by side, nice and snug with artwork packed inside. This is much easier than finding out later that two plinths don't fit in your car at once along with the artwork!.

  • Plinth material choice - Timber tends to be the norm, however avoid chip board as it is quite heavy and can become brittle with sharp edges chipping away over time. MDF is a good choice as it is relatively lightweight if edges are bumped it tends to dint only. MDF is also cheap to buy.

  • Plinth design features - Consider placing decorative moulding on the front of the plinth in which to feature a plaque or exhibition flyer. Will the plinth be used for anything electrical? If so perhaps cut a niche out of the base to hide an electrical cord inside and a detachable top to run the cord back out. Think about movability, consider cutting groove or hole near the base or in the sides so you can grip it easily when you need to move the plinth.

  • Painting the plinth - Use a good quality washable house paint, a hard wearing paint such as 'aquanamel' is a good choice, or an exterior house paint. If you don't want to go with a traditional white colored plinth consider a specialist paint coating to give a dramatic effect. You should also give the base a few coats of paint to protect against any potential water damage and be sure to keep the remaining paint as inevitably you will need to touch up the painted surface after each exhibition

If you don't have the carpentry skills to make a plinth yourself any carpenter can manufacturer a timber plinth for you. Some Easel Manufacturers will also manufacturer plinths for sale.

Plinths and other display stands can also be hired from Exhibition Services or Display Equipment Manufacturers.
