Red Earth pigment has not only been used from the very earliest times, at least 100,000 years. In ancient, times the natural ore Cinnabar was discovered and eventually the Chinese developed a synthetic version called Vermilion which remained the most important red until the discovery of Cadmium Red in 1907. The search for the perfect non fading deep red for painting expensive cars during the 20th century meant a proliferation of reds of varying qualities. At the end of the century the Pyrrole reds and oranges finally have produced the desired results of beauty, clean colors, transparency, high tinting strength, non toxicity, absolute permanence comparable with the Cadmium’s, and suitability for use in all media.
