Saw Dust Clay
A simple home made sculptural clay. Saw dust clay dough is great for making dolls, puppets, bird feeders, bowls and sculptures. It results in a very hard finish that can be sanded.
Saw Dust Clay Ingredients:
- 3 cups sawdust
- 2 cups flour
- Warm water
Step 1: In a large bowl mix the saw dust with approximately 2/3 of the water. Mix and then continue to add water until the mixture begins to stiffen, but still pliable. If the dough is a little crumbly add a little more flour.
Step 2: On a flat surface lay some sheets of newspaper and knead the clay until it reaches an elastic consistency.
Working with saw dust clay is easy, the dough may be molded into any shape desired and then dried in the sun or air dried for approximately 3 to 5 days. Once it is completely dry it can be sanded if desired, painted, decoupaged or gilded etc.
HEALTH WARNING: Only use untreated timber saw dust to create your clay, be sure NOT to use saw dust from MDF sheets, Plywood, Chipboard or Treated Pine, as these may contain toxic chemicals or residues of industrial adhesives.
