A sea sponge comes from the ocean it is the remnant body of an animal from the family of poriferans. When alive sponges are jelly-like and form on the ocean floor often in and around reefs.

Sponges are very absorbent and an artist can use a sponge for many different applications. 

A sea sponge is commonly used for a decorative painting technique, called ‘sponging’. To try this technique dampen the sponge with water then lightly dabb it into paint. Then apply to the canvas.

A sea sponge gives quite an organic looking pattern and can be used to great effect over a large area.
