The wooden support for canvas. Many people buy canvases already on stretchers, however they are rarely of the quality possible when stretching one’s own. To stretch canvas special canvas pliers are used, and either tacks and a hammer, or a tacking gun. The first stretch is made across the middle of the shortest side, then rotate to go across the middle of the longer side. At each ‘pull’ 2 or 3 tacks are put in, then the canvas rotated to put 2 or 3 in the other direction. This proceeds evenly towards the corners, and when they are reached they are neatly folded for final tacks. The back is then trimmed and tacked as necessary for a neat job.
