Vitreous Glass (Mosaics)

Vitreous Glass is a form of tesserae; a type of glass used for glass mosaic tiles. It is very similar to Smalti Mosaic Tiles.

The characteristics of vitreous glass is that one side is generally curved or rippled and allows for better grip within the tile adhesive. The other face is flat. Vitreous Glass is produced by exposing powdered glass to an extreme heat until it melts and becomes molten, similar to Smalti is is then cut or broken apart as it is cooling.

Vitreous Glass is available in a wide array of colors. Specialty Vitreous Glass is where the additional materials such as reflective metallic particles such as mica, oxides or chemicals are added or layered within the powdered mix prior or during manufacture.

Due to production vitreous glass varies in thickness and it is very hard wearing, for this reason, Vitreous glass it often used for outdoor mosaics, or mosaic pathways.

You can buy Vitreous Glass from Mosaic Supply Stores, or supplies of Glass Materials.
